Artist Statement
Words shape our society, they shape the people we have become and will further mould us into the people we wish to be. We are constantly engulfed in social media, articles, books and language of all kinds.
Words can shed light in a dark world. They give a sense of belonging to anyone who takes the time to pay attention. With freestyle verses, my poetry aims to take away the negative connotation that words have in our current society, while providing an enjoyable and relatable experience to all readers.
There are many people who live inside of their heads and have trouble escaping from that impenetrable cell; I am one of those people. The intent of my work is to share this experience and help my readers feel less alone.

My name is Melina Leonis, and I am a student at Dawson College in the Arts & Culture program. Over the course of my two years at Dawson, I've taken courses that focus on Journalism and writing, while also learning the history of art and how it has become so relevant in our current society. Throughout this, I have always possessed a passion for poetry; as words have a power that no one can explain.
On this site, you will stumble upon a project I put together over my final semester in college. It will capture my learnings in this program and how they have embossed my passions. You will be able to scroll through my process, plan and lastly, my final product.
